Flaxseeds prove that good things really do come in small packages. If you’re vegan, you probably know these tiny seeds are one of the few plant-based sources of Omega-3 fatty acids. You may not know, however, that you have to grind the seeds in a flax seed grinder or pestle and mortar in order to release their full nutritional benefit.

So—bad news—that means sprinkling whole flaxseeds on the top of your smoothie bowl is likely ineffective. Flaxseeds are tough and they’re small enough to be missed when chewing.

They may, therefore, pass through your system undigested. So, if you want to reap the benefit of their cholesterol-balancing Omega 3’s, as well as their natural fiber and vitamins, you have to grind flax seeds into a powder. (1)

Fortunately, grinding flaxseed at home is quite simple with the right tools. Whether you’re a pro or totally new to including flaxseed in your diet, our guide will help you determine how to find the best flax seed grinder for you. Then, we’ll review some of the most-bought grinders on the market.

Ready to get more nutritional benefit from your flaxseeds? Then let’s get started!

What should I look for when shopping for a flax grinder?

ground linseed in spoon - grinder for flax seeds

Different styles of grinders will work for different people. Here are a few things to consider before you go shopping for your flax grinder:

Manual or electric?

Probably the biggest choice to make is if you want to grind your flaxseed by hand or let a machine do the hard work for you.

Some people really enjoy the ritual of grinding their seeds manually. This approach also gives you better control over the consistency of the grind. Most manual grinders use ceramic or steel burrs that can be adjusted to meet your preference, but you can also use a pestle and mortar – if you have both the time and the patience!

On the other hand, electric grinders are able to process a large amount of flax quickly. You can store ground flaxseed if you prefer to make a larger batch at a time. Just place in an airtight container and keep it in the fridge.

That being said, it’s advisable not to grind up more than you’ll use in a month or two, as the oil contained within these little seeds of goodness can go rancid after a while once they’ve been ground down.

Small or large capacity?

The capacity of flaxseed grinders varies considerably. Some manual grinders allow you to store small amounts of seed to grind slowly over a period of time. Other electric models can grind several ounces of seeds in a matter of seconds.

Again, your personal preference will dictate what you need. A person who adds two tablespoons of flax to their morning smoothie will have different needs than the person who likes to sprinkle a bit over their fresh salad.

Portable or not?

The smallest flax grinders weigh only a few ounces. The heavy-duty models are several pounds. If you have a small kitchen or enjoy taking your nutrition on-the-go, you may want to opt for a travel-friendly grinder that you can easily pack or store.

Metal, glass, or plastic?

The blades or burr of flax grinders are usually stainless steel or ceramic. However, your flax will also come into contact with the grinding cup and chamber. Usually, these canisters are made from stainless steel, glass, or plastic.

You may have a strong preference for one over the other. Plastic especially concerns some people who are worried about toxins ending up in their food, but since the flax isn’t heated there’s less risk of this with a plastic grinder. Really, the main downside to a plastic canister is that it may become scratched or chipped over time.

Stainless steel and glass are cleaner than plastic, but they are heavier. Neither or likely to scratch from routine grinding. Of course, a glass container will have to be handled with care, though.

Is there anything else I should know about flaxseed grinders?

One final note: grinders can be tricky to clean. Any residual moisture near the blades may shorten the life of your grinder. When grinding flaxseed, you should take care to wipe and dry your grinder immediately after use.

Wet flaxseeds have a habit of adhering themselves to any surface like glue, so this step cannot be understated. To avoid unnecessary moisture getting on your flaxseed grinder, it’s best not to grind your flax seeds directly over hot foods or steaming pots. Instead, simply grind into a separate container and sprinkle on as required.

If you’re leaning toward an electric model, you may want to be sure that you can remove the grinding cup from the rest of the unit. Since the electric components can’t be exposed to water, the grinder will be easier to clean if you can take it apart.

Choosing the Best grinder for flax seeds: Our Reviews

There is a lot of variety in flax seed grinders, so the choices may seem overwhelming. For that reason, we’ve compiled reviews of some popular flaxseed grinders to help you choose.

Let’s take a look!

Kingtop Grinder with Stainless Steel Blade

The Kingtop Grinder with Stainless Steel Blade is powered by a 200-watt motor, making the task of grinding flaxseeds a breeze.

This flax grinder weighs just under two pounds and is easy to use. Just secure the lid and press the button to start grinding!

The Kingtop Grinder with Stainless Steel Blade has a safety-lock lid, meaning the blades will only turn when the lid is in place. The grinding container can be cleaned with the included brush or a damp cloth (be sure to dry thoroughly afterwards!).

Also, the Kingtop flax grinder comes with a 2-year warranty, the longest of any product on this list.

Because of the potential for overheating, you shouldn’t run your Kingtop flax grinder for more than 30 seconds at a time. This should be plenty of time to grind individual servings of flaxseed, but you may have issues if you’re trying to make a big batch to store.

The grinder also seems to work best when the blades are just barely covered with flaxseed—definitely less than its full capacity.

Customers like that this grinder is quiet compared to others that they’ve owned. People describe it as simple to use and “powerful.” The Kingtop grinder may be a simple little gadget, but it seems to get the job done for most people.

A few complaints about the Kingtop grinder indicate that the grinding cup is difficult to detach, which may make it harder to pour out your ground flax seeds without making a mess.

This grinder was also a little too small for some people. At most, it can grind 4 tablespoons of flaxseed at a time and does have a tendency to overheat with multiple uses.

LIKES
  • Quick and easy to use
  • Quiet
  • Powerful motor
DISLIKES
  • Small capacity for an electric grinder
  • May overheat with multiple uses
  • Grinding cup hard to remove

Brewberry Elite Series Electric Grinder

The sleek, all stainless steel body of the Brewberry Elite Series Electric Grinder conceals a powerful 200-watt motor and it comes with two sets of blades for different consistencies.

Like other electric models, the cap is safety-locked so the grinder will only start with the lid securely in place.

To use the Brewberry Elite Series Electric Grinder, you simply press down the cap – nice and easy. For people who are wary of plastic, this grinder comes with two stainless steel cups to hold your flaxseed. However, a few people found the design of the cups difficult to clean.

Customers love how quick this grinder works. The four-blade option, in particular, produces fine-ground flaxseeds in seconds. Similar to the stainless steel cups, the blades may be difficult to clean if left for too long; the best approach is to clean the cup and blades right after use.

Though most people seemed pleased with their Brewberry Elite Series Electric Grinder, a few complained that it produced uneven grounds. Another common complaint was the level of noise.

Though no one expected this grinder to be quiet, some customers were turned off by the harsh, loud sounds produced while grinding.

LIKES
  • 200-watt motor
  • Comes with two sets of blades
  • Stainless steel cups
DISLIKES
  • Noisy
  • Cleaning may present an issue for some
  • Some reports of uneven grinding

Kyocera Pepper, Salt, Spice and Seed Mill with Adjustable Advanced Ceramic Grinder

The Kyocera Pepper, Salt, Spice and Seed Mill with Adjustable Advanced Ceramic Grinder features an interesting, futuristic design that comes in a variety of colors to match your kitchen. The ceramic grinder burr is adjustable so you can easily find the perfect coarseness for your flaxseed.

This grinder is manual, which means it has far less bulk and noise than its electric cousins and it weighs just 8 ounces and can be stored in any drawer or cabinet. The Kyocera Spice Mill is also cute enough to keep on your dining table for a quick dose of Omega 3 whenever you want it.

Other features include a handy cap keeps up to 6 ounces of spices fresh during storage. The Kyocera grinder is also dishwasher safe and easy to clean.

Customers like the smooth, even grounds produced by this grinder. This Kyocera mill seemed most effective for light, daily use. If you like to grind big batches of flaxseed at one time, this small manual grinder is probably not the best choice.

Though some people describe this flax grinder as “durable,” others had some issues with the longevity of the Kyocera grinder. Be careful: if you adjust the burr too fine, it may actually start grinding itself!

Overall, this mill is a great choice for someone who wants their flaxseed truly fresh-ground with each serving. You’ll have to put in a little manual labor, but customers say the results are worth it.

LIKES
  • Cool design
  • Produces smooth grinds
  • Storage cap
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Range of colors to suit any kitchen
DISLIKES
  • Manual operation may not suit everyone
  • Not ideal for making big batches
  • May grind itself if adjusted too fine

Quiseen One-Touch Electric Grinder

The Quiseen One-Touch Electric Grinder features a 2.5 oz seed capacity, grip-able sides to make it easier to hold, and an attractive black and stainless steel exterior. This flax grinder is easy to set up and use right out of the box and it’s quiet compared to similar products.

You won’t have to worry about safety with this grinder. The “on” button is located on the lid, so you can’t activate the blades without the lid in place. However, this does mean you have to hold the button down throughout grinding since there is no auto-timed feature.

The Quiseen One-Touch Electric Grinder weighs 1.6 pounds but some people described it as “bulky.” Some customers were also disappointed that the holder does not remove from the grinder, claiming that this makes it hard to remove the ground seeds and clean the grinder blades.

Some other issues include problems with grind consistency. A few customers also brought up that the Quiseen seems to grind pretty slowly. If you’re making a big batch of ground flaxseed, you may have to practice some patience to get the fine grind you want.

All in all, many customers are happy with this grinder. Based on their experiences, the Quiseen One-Touch Electric Grinder seems to work best with occasional use. If you like prepping your ingredients in bulk, this may not be the best flaxseed grinder for you.

LIKES
  • Easy to set up and use
  • Quiet
  • Light for an electric grinder
DISLIKES
  • Cup does not remove from the grinder
  • Grinds slowly
  • Despite being light, it feels “bulky”

Asvel Glass Sesame Seed Grinder Flax Seed Grinder

This handy little grinder—designed for both sesame and flax seeds—is a minimalist, but quality, product.

The Asvel Glass Flax Seed Grinder includes a cover to keep flaxseeds stored inside away from moisture and to fill the grinder, you simply remove the cap and pour in the seeds.

The ceramic burr on the Asvel Glass Grinder is adjustable so you can set it to your preference. Owners of this grinder emphasize that it is nicely constructed and “not cheap.” Like other manual grinders, it will work best for small, fresh quantities versus bulk ingredient prep.

The instruction manual is in Japanese, but most customers found the Asvel Glass Grinder intuitive enough to use without directions. If you’re having trouble, one tip is to roast your flaxseeds first. Then, experiment with adjusting the burr to find a smooth grinding consistency.

With a little patience, using the Asvel Glass Flax Seed Grinder can become a delightful experience. This grinder seems to be ideal for the flax connoisseur or fresh food junkie. Though the device itself is easy to use, it may take some trial and error to optimize your results.

LIKES
  • Adjustable ceramic burr
  • High-quality construction
  • Inexpensive
  • Cap for storage
DISLIKES
  • Can be a little finicky
  • Flax seeds may have to be toasted to get the best results
  • For small quantities only

Apollo Chef Manual Burr Grinder for Coffee and Spice Seeds

The Apollo Chef Manual Burr Grinder for Coffee and Spice Seeds contains a conical ceramic burr for a flawless, even grind.

The stainless steel handle is ultra-durable, but also detachable. This portability makes the Apollo one of the best grinder for flax seeds to take on the road.

This flax seed mill grinder weighs just 8 ounces but feels “heavy duty” according to happy customers. People also love the easily adjustable grind that allows them to use this tool for a variety of tasks.

The main complaint about the Apollo Chef Manual Burr Grinder is that it takes too many “turns” of the handle to produce a serving of flax. On the other hand, the crank itself turns smoothly, so it’s not much of an issue. Many people don’t seem to mind and enjoy the ritual of grinding flaxseed for their health.

Overall, the Apollo Chef Manual Burr Grinder is effective, but may seem a little labor intensive. This small grinder is ideal for a traveler who wants to take their plant-based Omega-3 on the road, or a home chef who loves the ritual of preparing a healthy meal or snack.

LIKES
  • Even grind
  • Stainless steel design will suit most kitchens
  • Durable, detachable handle
  • Quality, but lightweight
DISLIKES
  • Time intensive
  • Requires a lot of “turns” to grind
  • Small capacity

KRUPS F203 Electric Spice and Coffee Grinder with Stainless Steel Blades

The KRUPS F203 Electric Spice and Coffee Grinder can handle up to 3 ounces of flaxseed at once with its 200-watt motor and stainless steel blades.

The oval design of the grinding chamber circulates seeds for a more even grind. For an electric grinder, it’s about as light as they come at just one pound.

Using a KRUPS F203 Electric Grinder will yield a nice “pulpy” milled flaxseed that works well in smoothies. Customers report that this grinder for flax seeds is durable and easy to clean. The operation and safety features are simple and reliable.

Some may be disappointed to hear that the chamber on the KRUPS F203 Grinder is made of plastic. Though there aren’t any reports of serious chipping, several customers noticed that the plastic lid “fogs” quickly from being scratched by the contents whirring around during the grinding process.

While people love the fast, even grind that the KRUPS provides, reviews suggest that it is louder than other models. A few people also experienced issues with grounds getting stuck under the blades. Finally, some owners found the chamber hard to remove after grinding.

Despite these issues, the KRUPS F203 Electric Spice and Coffee Grinder with Stainless Steel Blades is a fan-favorite because of the quality grounds it produces. If you don’t mind plastic parts or a little extra cleaning effort, this may be the best flaxseed grinder for you.

LIKES
  • Even grind, ideal for flaxseeds
  • Easy to use
  • Lightweight
  • Oval designed chamber for better results
  • 200W motor
DISLIKES
  • Plastic chamber
  • Comparatively loud
  • Chamber can sometimes be difficult to remove

Secura Electric Coffee And Spice Grinder With Stainless-Steel Blades

The Secura Electric Coffee And Spice Grinder With Stainless-Steel Blades includes a cord-wrap base for easy storage and neater countertops and the exterior is fashioned in smart stainless steel.

In fact, the inside is stainless steel too, limiting the exposure of plastic to your food.

If overheating has been a problem for other grinders that you’ve owned, you may be pleased to hear that Secura designed their flax mill grinder to work in pulses so the motor won’t overheat.

Though it might take longer to make each batch, you may save time in the long run by not having to wait for a cranky flaxseed grinder to cool down. The pulses also make this grinder relatively quiet.

Another thing to note is that the design of the chamber may make it hard to get ground seeds out without spilling. In addition, the capacity is rather small: 1.8 ounces or less.

Finally, a few customers report that their Secura Electric Coffee And Spice Grinder died after a short period of time, leaving them temporarily flax-less.

LIKES
  • Cord-wrap base
  • Stainless steel inside and out
  • Pulses to help keep motor cool
DISLIKES
  • Can be hard to remove ground seeds
  • Small capacity
  • Questionable durability

So which is the best grinder for flaxseed?

best flax seed grinder - krups

From this list of popular products, we prefer the KRUPS F203 Electric Spice and Coffee Grinder with Stainless Steel Blades. We’re not the only ones: this powerful and sleek grinder is a best-seller for a reason.

The feature that makes the KRUPS grinder stand out is the quality of the ground seeds it produces. Designed with an oval chamber, this grinder circulates the seeds to provide an even product. People also love how easy this grinder is to use and clean.

On the other hand, some folks weren’t too happy about the use of plastic in the chamber. Others thought the motor was rather loud and the chamber was difficult to remove.

However, the KRUPS F203 Electric Spice and Coffee Grinder still remains an incredibly popular choice for flaxseed grinding.

11 thoughts on “Flax Seed Grinder: Mill Grinders And Electric Grinding Machine Reviews”

    • Hi Julia,

Thanks for commenting! I chose it because it produces the best results. I wasn’t looking for cheap flax seed grinders or quiet ones in particular, but rather those that stood up well to regular usage and offer consistently even grinds. Hope this helps ?

  1. I have a Westinghouse coffee blade grinder 200 watt motor with detachable plastic grinding cup which is ok but the main problem with this is that it only produces “gritty” flaxseed no matter how much you “grind” it and I am looking for something that makes the flax a powder that can be used better than the grit. I was told a $350 Vitamix would do the job that that is way more than I want to pay for a grinder. I’ve used an old Krupp’s grinder before but am still looking for one that produces flax powder. Any suggestions on which reasonably priced machine would do this!? Thank you for any suggestions,

    • Apologies for not getting back to you sooner, Edward. Your comment got lost along the way and I’ve just spotted it.

To be honest, to get a “powder” from a grinder is a pretty tall order due to the nature of the seed, I think even a vitamix would struggle to break them down further as they have a tendency to “bounce” off the blades as they hit.

Whenever I want a finer flax meal, I tend to revert back to an age old method: pestle and mortar. Yes, it’s total pain in the butt, and not advisable for big batches, but it does work when you want to break down those pesky seeds a little more.

    • The Black & Decker Smart Grind does a great job grinding a week’s worth of flax seeds. I’ve used it for a long time.

  2. Looking for a dual voltage, or battery operated or manual grinder for flaxseed for traveling in America’s and Europe and Asia. I need to grind 2 tablespoons per day in a short amount of time.
