Finding the best wheatgrass juicer can be somewhat of a chore. There are so many different makes and models, and finding the right one for you can end up being more than just a little confusing.

So, in order to cut through the noise I thought I’d do the donkey work for you and give you a roundup review of the best wheatgrass juicers on the market today.

Are there different types of wheatgrass juicers?

When you first start looking at the different juicers for wheatgrass in store and online, you’ll notice that they largely fall into two separate categories: electric and manual.

The difference between the two is obvious when you see them.

The manual wheatgrass juicer has a crank handle that you turn by hand to process your grass into that deep green shot, whereas an electric wheatgrass juicer will do all of the hard work for you. Which one suits you best will largely be dependant on personal preferences, such as how often you intend to use your juicer.

Oh, and remember, your standard centrifugal juicer probably won’t take to well to wheatgrass, which is why these masticating machines exist. You’ll get a much higher yield with a dedicated wheatgrass juicer and you won’t have to worry about the heat from centrifugal machines heating up your grass and depleting the nutrients.

Considerations when searching for the best wheatgrass juicer

Apart from deciding which type of wheatgrass juicer you should go for, there are a few other things you’ll want to keep in mind. These include:

Price

While this will be largely subjective, wheatgrass juicing machines are not the cheapest things in the world; regardless of whether they’re manual or electric. Obviously, manual juicers are generally cheaper than their electric counterparts, but you’ll still be parting with a pretty penny.

As with most things in life, you do get what you pay for. So, the question you need to ask yourself is whether or not you’ll get enough use out of your new kitchen gadget. Too often we buy something snazzy only to see it gathering dust before long.

Noise

This won’t be a issue for many people, but for some it can be a real turn off. Some machines are a lot noisier than others and, if you intend to drink your shot first thing in the morning, that can be a problem. Check reviews for any complaints of excessive noise levels before you buy.

Ease of use

Naturally, manual juicers are going to win this little competition hands down, but not everyone wants to be cranking a handle at 6am! Electric juicers shouldn’t be complicated either, but some are. If you’re not willing to spend time learning how to get the most from your machine, stick with one of the basic models and save your money.

Cleaning

Probably the biggest issue with any kitchen appliance is the clean up process. Whether you’re buying the best food processor for nut butters or a mixer grinder for Indian cooking, ease of cleaning is always something you should have in mind before purchasing.

As with most gadgets, cleaning is made a whole lot simpler if you tackle it straight away. However, some models are still easier to clean than others, so be sure to read the reviews to see if customers are fully satisfied with the product. Some may also be dishwasher safe, so look out for that, too.

Speed

This is another big one, and for many people it will come as a surprise that slower is actually better in this case. High RPM (revolutions per minute) machines will cause oxidation and can ruin the nutritional content of wheatgrass juice.

Opting for a slower machine will help protect the healthy enzymes that are thought to bring health benefits to drinkers of the green stuff.

Plastic or metal

The augers and housing of your juicer will come under a good deal of strain over the life of your machine, so you’ll want to ensure that the parts are up to the job.

Metal parts will obviously give you greater durability, but will make your machine that much heavier. Plastic parts, on the other hand, are lighter, but can be flimsier. Check to see which type of plastic is used, as some are sturdier than others.

Versatility

While a dedicated wheatgrass juicer will probably bring better results, it might be more viable for you to think about buying a machine that can handle more than one task.

Some gadgets can be used for other tasks, and many are extremely good at juicing green leafy veggies, a job that a lot of inferior machines struggle with.

Size

Something else that we often overlook, only to regret it once we take it out of the box, is size.

Those is smaller apartments will do well to inspect the footprint of their prospective juicing machine before purchasing, as will anyone who wants to get it off the counter and into the cupboards after every use. Vertical machines may be the way forward for you if you have limited counter space.

Warranty

Finally, there’s your warranty. As we’ve already touched upon, these appliances are far from cheap, so you’ll want to know you’re protected.

Check out the manufacturers warranty to see how long you get as it can vary from as little as 6 months right up to 15 years.

Do I really need a wheatgrass juicer?

Wheatgrass juice fans are plentiful and pretty vocal. There are claims that this edible grass is the answer to all your health concerns; a cure-all, if you will. I’m not so sure about all that.

In fact, there’s actually very little evidence to say that wheatgrass is any better than other fruits and veggies, and a solitary shot of wheatgrass won’t even give you one of your “5 (or should that be 10?) A Day”. (1, 2)

That being said, there’s no concrete evidence to say that this juice is completely useless either. So many people swear that regular consumption of wheatgrass juice has made a positive impact on their lives it’s hard to ignore, but I just wanted to make it clear that science doesn’t necessarily back this up.

To summarize, wheatgrass probably isn’t the superfood that many would lead you to believe, but it’s certainly won’t do you any harm in small doses. So, if you’re still on board and want a glass of grassy greenness in your life on a regular basis, let’s carry on with the post, shall we?

Can I use wheatgrass powder instead?

wheatgrass powder and shot of juice

In short, yes. However, as with any supplement or refined foodstuff, it won’t be quite as good as using the fresh stuff, and the product can vary tremendously from brand to brand.

Wheatgrass powder isn’t as bioactive as the fresh young grass that you’ll be using in your juicer and it may also contain other ingredients if you skip reading the packaging.

It is, however, a lot more convenient, as all you’ll need is a measuring spoon and there’s next to no cleaning involved with that! Juicing, on the other hand, takes a bit of commitment – especially if you’re doing it on a daily basis.

One last thing to remember about wheatgrass powder is that is far more concentrated than knocking back a single shot. Start off with a small amount and work your way up, as too much may cause headaches and nauseousness.

Where can I buy wheatgrass for juicing?

Buying the right wheatgrass for juicing is vital if you want to get the most from your morning shot.

Grow organic wheatgrass at home with this kit from Living Whole Foods

Freshly harvested wheatgrass is said to be the best you can buy, but finding it may prove a little tricky. You can buy it online, but you’re putting a lot of trust into the supplier (who’s to know exactly when it was harvested and how long it has been stored for?).

Another option is to grow your own wheatgrass. Wheatgrass kits have become really popular since the home juicing craze took hold and there are a number of decent options available. For more info on growing your own wheatgrass at home, check out the video below from Hippocrates:

How to prepare wheatgrass for juicing?

Now that you’ve grown your wheatgrass and bought one of the juicers from the list below, it’s time to turn that grass into a shot of green goodness. Thankfully, it’s a really straightforward process.

All you need to do is harvest a batch of wheatgrass by chopping it back with a sharp pair of scissors or a knife (see this post for the best kitchen knife sets on the market). For a single shot of wheatgrass juice, you will need around a quarter cup of fresh grass.

Next, wash your wheatgrass thoroughly under cold running water. Wheatgrass is also very susceptible to mold, so keep an eye out for that at this stage. If you spot any, be safe and compost the bad wheatgrass and cut some more back for your juice.

Finally, you’ll need to cut your wheatgrass into smaller pieces. This may seem like a pointless step if you’re going to be using a wheatgrass juicer, but believe me, you need to do it as it will make the juicing process so much easier. (3)

Now you’re ready to juice!

Best wheatgrass juicer reviews

Now you have all that wheatgrass information under your belt, it’s time to take a look at six of the best wheatgrass juicers on the market today.

Let’s get started!

Omega J8006 Nutrition Center masticating Dual-stage Juicer

First up is the Omega J8006. This gadget not only looks great, it also gets the job done, too.

The low 80 RPM means fewer nutrients are lost when juicing and the Omega is surprisingly easy to clean after use, although it could use an extra brush specifically designed for the chute.

Many will be delighted with its versatility as it’ll handle all manner of tasks, from grinding up nuts to making homemade pasta. This appliance can take the place of several other gadgets in your kitchen.

Another thumbs up comes for the noise…or lack of it! This is relatively quiet for such a powerful machine, so you can happily juice away first thing in the morning.

The downsides of this gadget are few and far between, but there are some. Firstly, it is very slow, even for a low RPM appliance, but it does extract a lot of juice, so maybe you need to weigh that up before buying. It can also clog quite easily, especially if you try and push too much soft produce through it at once.

Finally, the chute is a little on the small side. I know you always need to chop veg up before putting it through a masticating juicer, but this is really small. On the whole, though, the Omega J8006 is an excellent bit of kit.

Looks quite pretty, too!

LIKES
  • Very easy to clean
  • Quite quiet for a machine of this type
  • Makes juice exceptionally well and leaves resulting pulp dry, so very little is wasted
  • Simple to use
  • Versatile
  • Looks good if you intend to leave it out for all to see
  • 15 year warranty!
DISLIKES
  • Chute could be bigger
  • Slow processing time
  • Can get clogged quite easily, especially with wetter produce

AIO Slow Masticating Juice Extractor

The AIO Slow Masticating Juice Extractor equals the Omega J8006 for RPMs at a highly respectable 80 and it keeps things quiet, too. The manufacturer claims that the audible output is less than 60 decibels, which is pretty impressive.

It’s also pretty versatile and capable of juicing a number of different fruits and vegetables that would struggle in a standard centrifugal machine. Plus, if things do happen to get stuck, the AIO has a handy reverse feature that can untangle and unclog the auger in no time, which is very handy indeed.

Clean up is easy and the parts seem sturdy enough for the money, even though its not from one of the better known juicing manufacturers. It’s quite a compact, upright unit too, so it’s great for those with limited counter space.

Warranty is two years, which is better than one, but far from the likes of the Omega above. The design may raise a few eyebrows for some as well; will shocking lime green against black fit into every kitchen? Probably not.

Overall, this is a good little machine for the price point and it’s perfect for anyone who will only be juicing once in a while.

LIKES
  • Relatively inexpensive
  • Nice compact size, ideal for smaller kitchens
  • Easy to use
  • Clean up is simple, too
  • Quiet
DISLIKES
  • Design may not be to everyone’s taste
  • Feeder tube is a little small and awkward to use
  • Juice cup could be bigger, too

Lexen GP27 – The Original Healthy Juicer (Manual)

For those of you looking for a good manual juicer, this one from Lexen is worthy of your consideration.

It’s simple design will look good in any kitchen, but be sure you have somewhere you can fasten it to, as it has to be attached by way of a clamp, which can be problematic with some work-surfaces.

One reason why some people prefer to manually juice their wheatgrass is the fact that there’s no chance of imparting excessive heat which plays havoc with the nutritional profile of your juice.

The Lexen manual juicer performs as it should in this regard, but be prepared for a workout! Grinding down enough wheatgrass for a couple of shots takes a considerable amount of effort.

The resulting juice is, however, great. Clean tasting and fresh, just as it should be.

There are a few downsides, though. While operating the Lexen is pretty simple, it can be quite a messy affair, and the yield is nowhere near as good as the more expensive electric juicers.

Some of the parts also feel a little brittle, too, so longevity may be an issue as well.

LIKES
  • Manual operation means no chance of overheating your juice
  • Easy to use, simply turn a handle and you’re juicing
  • Inexpensive
DISLIKES
  • A little messy to use
  • Doesn’t feel like the sturdiest bit of kit in the world
  • Low yield
  • Just one year’s warranty

Handy Pantry HJ Hurricane Stainless Steel Manual Wheatgrass Juicer

Here’s another manual juicer for you. This time it’s the turn of Handy Pantry’s HJ Hurricane!

Made from stainless steel, this wheatgrass gadget is built to last and is pretty attractive in an old-fashioned kind of way. As one would expect, it’s simple to use as well.

Clean up is easy, but the clamp may cause an issue for some users, although it will work on counters and tables up to 2¼”. Providing your work-surface is under that, set up is easy and straightforward.

The yield is pretty good when juicing wheatgrass, but other veggies may prove to be a little disappointing. It’s also a juicer that’ll test your strength; it takes quite a bit of turning, but you can find a rhythm after a while.

One thing to bear in mind with this appliance is that it really is a dedicated wheatgrass juicer. Sure, some other veggies will go through it, but you’ll get a better result from electric machines. If you’re looking to stick to wheatgrass, though, this’ll do the job.

If, however, you’re looking for something more versatile, I’d consider one of the electric wheatgrass juicers on the list instead.

LIKES
  • Really solid and durable
  • Easy assembly
  • Simple to clean
  • 5 year warranty
DISLIKES
  • Might be hard for some to turn effectively
  • Quite expensive for a manual juicer
  • Clamping may be problematic
  • Not as versatile as some of the other machines on this list

Tribest Slowstar Vertical Slow Juicer SW-2000

Back to the electric juicers with the Tribest Slowstar Vertical Slow Juicer SW-2000.

This masticating juicer is sure to be popular with those who have limited counter space, as its vertical design means that it has a much smaller footprint than its horizontal rivals, but does it perform as well?

In short, yes it does. This juice extractor does a fantastic job with green leafy veg and wheatgrass, and with an extremely low RPM of 47, you can be sure that you’re getting maximum nutrition whenever you use this machine.

The Tribest comes with a 10 year warranty, so you get plenty of peace of mind there. Not that it should be a concern with this appliance, everything is sturdy and even the plastic parts seem as though they’ll last well.

The feeding chute is easy to use and the yield is decent too. There’s also a handy juice cap that helps stop those annoying drips, but clean up could be easier. However, it does come with some tools that help with the job.

Despite the good points, there are a few concerns about the Tribest. A few users complain about the frequency with which this appliance gets clogged up and it has also been noted that some of the pulp makes its way into the juice, which won’t be ideal for those of you who like their juice super smooth.

All in all, though, the Tribest is a decent machine.

LIKES
  • Convenient upright design
  • Super slow RPM (47)
  • Easy to follow manual
  • Juice cap helps stop drips whilst juicing
  • 10 year warranty
DISLIKES
  • Not the easiest to clean
  • Can get clogged on occasion
  • Some pulp may find its way into your juice

Omega VERT Slow Juicer VSJ843QS

The final gadget on our list is the Omega VERT Slow Juicer VSJ843QS, and it could be argued that we’ve saved the best till last.

This new machine from Omega has been getting rave reviews from juicing fanatics, and it’s easy to see why. It’s compact, versatile, and has the slowest RPM of all the juices on our list at just 43 revolutions per minute.

Despite that, juicing isn’t all that slow at all, and the results are really good. No foam and very little (if any) pulp makes it into the juice, making it a delight to drink.

As this is a newer model, the design seems to be a little more with it, too. This is a decent looking kitchen gadget that also has a high quality “feel” to it. Omega backs this up with another 15 year warranty.

Happy to report that the Omega VERT Slow Juicer VSJ843QS is easy to clean as well. It even has an auto-clean feature to help you out!

That being said, some negatives include the fact that Omega advertise the VSJ843QS as being good for making nut milk, but a few users have had issues with the inner mesh breaking. Some also claim to have experienced leakage after a few months of use.

Other than that, this new model from Omega gets a resounding thumbs up!

LIKES
  • Vertical design is perfect for tight spots
  • Modern looks fit with newer kitchens beautifully
  • Slowest RPM on our list (43)
  • Makes great pulp- and foam-free juice
  • Auto-clean function makes cleaning simple
  • Can handle lots of different fruits and veg
  • Very quiet juicer
  • 15 year warranty
DISLIKES
  • Despite being easy to clean, there are quite a few parts to deal with
  • Doesn’t perform well at making nut milk as advertised
  • One of the more expensive machines

So, what’s the best wheatgrass juicer for home use?

That’s it! Our list of the best wheatgrass juicers is at an end, but which one came out on top?

Well, firstly let me say that there’s no real duds on this list. Sure, some perform better than others, but then some are more expensive than others, so I guess that’s to be expected.

The one I’d recommend, however, is the new Omega VERT Slow Juicer VSJ843QS.

The Best Masticating Juicer - Omega VSJ843QS

The incredibly slow RPM (43) means that you’ll be retaining plenty of the nutrients that would have otherwise been lost in a centrifugal juicer (and indeed many other masticating ones, too).

Just as important as the nutrient retention is the taste of the juice itself, and the Omega scores highly here too. Again, a lot is due to the slow speed at which this juicer operates. You’ll find less foam and pulp in your glass with this model, which makes the whole drinking experience much more pleasurable. No one really looks good with a foamy green moustache, do they?

Operation and clean up is easy, and this model even has an auto-clean feature to get the process off to a flying start. That being said, there are lot of parts to clean with this particular machine, so expect your draining board to be rather full once you’re done.

Although the Omega is a vertical juicer, it’s still fits under most upper cabinets (something that has been a problem in the past with this type of appliance). It also means a much smaller footprint, so it’ll sit happily on your counter without taking up too much room.

Omega’s 15 year warranty is another big draw for the machine, and is welcomed at this price point. Knowing that you’re covered for wear and tear makes a big difference when making such a significant investment in an appliance, and this lengthy guarantee gives you adequate peace of mind.

The only real downside is that it doesn’t appear to handle the task of making nut milk quite as well as the manufacturer advertises. While that’s a pity, it shouldn’t put you off of this gadget if you are primarily looking for a juicer.

1 thought on “Best Wheatgrass Juicer: Which Masticating Extractor Should You Buy?”

  1. Thank you for the detailed read.
And thank you too for the tip that whichever juicer I have, I should chop the wheatgrass into smaller pieces to make the juicing even easier. I’m sure that will come in handy the next time I’m at it.
    Awesome review.
