OXO Good Grips Vegetable and Onion Chopper with Easy Pour Opening

Who among us hasn’t wept while chopping a particularly pungent onion, or avoided a recipe that called for a dozen different chopped veggies and herbs just to save ourselves the inevitable hand cramps?

We all know that a healthy vegan diet should be chock full of a variety of vibrant veggies, but that’s easier said than done when you have to chop, dice, and mince those veggies by hand. It’s a tedious, time-consuming chore that can suck the joy out of cooking.

Luckily, there are vegetable choppers. These handy kitchen tools can save you lots of time and stress, but some choppers are better than others. Our goal in this article is to help you find the best vegetable chopper for your needs so you can eat more veggies and be a happy, healthy vegan.

Types of vegetable choppers

Vegetable choppers come in a wide variety of designs, but they can be boiled down to two main types: electric and manual:

Electric vegetable choppers

Electric choppers typically have rotating blades attached to a motor that can be activated with the press of a button. They’re efficient at blending and pulverizing food, but if you want a perfectly diced onion or potato or a julienned bell pepper, electric choppers will simply create a mess.

That is why we’ve elected to focus solely on manual vegetable choppers for our list, as they are specifically designed to cut fruits and vegetables into uniform pieces without turning them to mush.

Manual vegetable choppers

Some types of manual choppers, such as the plunger and pull-string varieties, process food in much the same way as electric ones, turning your veggies into an irregularly chopped mess. What we’re looking for are perfectly diced veggies, which is why we’ll be focusing on manual choppers that use uniform chopping grates.

Most of these choppers have a similar design: a hinged lid that closes over a sharp chopping grate, forcing your vegetable or fruit to fall through the blades in a uniform dice. Keep in mind that all of the choppers we’ll review have a “catch container” in which the chopped food is collected, but not all manual choppers will come with one.

Even though manual choppers require more effort than electric ones, they produce results that electric choppers cannot, and they’re still much easier and faster to use than a knife.

What to look for in a top-notch chopper

When trying decide on which food chopper to buy, there are a few questions you’ll want to ask to make sure you’re choosing the right chopper for you.

How long will it last?

Vegetable choppers are built for convenience, but many (if not most) of them are not built to last. Most choppers have a plastic frame and, depending on the quality of the plastic and the integrity of the chopper’s design, they may last a year, a few months, or even just a few uses before cracking from stress and becoming unusable.

Don’t be fooled by cheap choppers. If you end up having to replace a low-cost chopper several times over the course of a year, you’ll find that it would have made more sense to invest in a sturdier chopper upfront. To further protect you from buyer’s remorse, consider a chopper that comes with a warranty.

What is it made of?

As I mentioned, the majority of manual vegetable choppers on the market will be made of plastic. Since this device is coming in direct contact with your food, make sure that it is BPA-free. While the safety of BPA has been debated for decades, it’s best to err on the side of caution and avoid exposing yourself and your family to it.

You’ll also want to make sure that the blades in your chopper are made with high quality stainless steel that will resist corrosion and rust.

How much can it hold?

Before you’re sold on the design of a particular chopper, be sure to find out what the maximum capacity of its catch container is, if it has one at all (all of the ones on our list do). If you regularly chop large portions of fruits and vegetables at once, you may become frustrated with a 1.5 c container that needs to be dumped every couple of minutes. On the other hand, if you’re cooking for one most nights, you probably don’t need a huge chopper with a 2-liter capacity.

Is it easy to clean?

The main purpose of a vegetable chopper is to save you time in the kitchen and make cooking easier and more convenient. That’s why it’s crucial that any chopper you choose is fairly easy to clean; otherwise, the time saved from manual chopping may be negated by the time you spend cleaning your chopper.

Because they’re usually made of plastic, not all manual choppers are dishwasher safe, and they have lots of nooks and crannies that can be difficult to clean by hand. Before choosing a chopper, find out what customers have to say about its cleaning process. You may also find it helpful to choose a vegetable dicer that comes with a cleaning tool to remove stuck bits of food from its grooves and cutting grid easily and safely.

What else can it do?

Some users may be fine with a simple, straightforward chopper that only does one thing — chop — but many home cooks are looking for versatile tools and devices that can do as much as possible. Enter the multipurpose chopper.

All-in-one choppers may come with mandolins, shredders, spiralizers, lemon juicers, and other attachments to replace as many kitchen tools as possible. If you’re considering a multipurpose chopper, make sure to choose one that has attachments you’ll actually use on a regular basis to avoid taking up precious space in your kitchen with unwanted clutter.

Things you should know before using a manual food chopper

Knowledge is power, people…even when it comes to choosing the best veggie chopper!

Caution: blades are sharp

This may seem like common sense, but it needs to be said: no matter how safe a chopper may claim to be, its blade are still sharp enough to slice your fingers. All choppers need to be handled with extreme caution, especially when being washed. You’ll also want to take care to ensure that children are never allowed to use your chopper without close supervision.

If your chopper doesn’t come with a safety glove, you may want to invest in one to prevent any bloody accidents.

Pre-cutting is a prerequisite

Not to rain on anyone’s parade here, but no chopper, no matter how high-end it is, can chop a whole onion or potato. Any chopper will require a certain amount of pre-cutting into halves, quarters, or slices, depending on what you’re cutting and how large your cutting grid is. The more you pre-cut, the less strain you’ll place on your chopper and the longer it is likely to last.

It may be frustrating to realize that you’ll still need to bring out your trusty cutting board and favorite vegetable chopping knife whenever you use your chopper, but you’ll still be saving yourself a lot of time, even with this extra step.

Some foods are better chopped by hand

While manual choppers are ideal for chopping most fruits and vegetables, there are certain foods that you shouldn’t expect to cut with the types of choppers that we’ll feature on our list. Among these are herbs, green onions, and nut cheeses.

Some herbs like parsley and cilantro, which are usually roughly chopped or minced, will do just fine in most electric food choppers, but the types of manual choppers on our list aren’t up to that task. The same goes for herbs like basil that need to be julienned; even manual choppers that have attachments for julienning are not suitable for such thin and delicate produce. Green onions are too thin and soft for most choppers as well, and might leave you with a slimy, butchered mess.

Cubes of nut-based cheeses and fruits make a delicious and decadent spread, but don’t count on your manual food chopper to handle these soft cheeses without getting half of the product stuck to the blades. Stick to hand-cutting these and other similarly dense, soft foods save yourself unneeded frustration.

Best Vegetable Chopper Reviews

Now that we know what to look for in a vegetable chopper and what to expect when using one, let’s find the best veggie chopper for you!

Alligator Stainless Steel Chopper

If you’re looking for a simple, sturdy food chopper that will last a lifetime, look no further than the Alligator Chopper. This chopper is made entirely of stainless steel (except for the BPA-free plastic catch container), making it much stronger and more durable than your typical plastic chopper.

Users love the sleek design of this chopper, which can make a lovely addition to your countertop. It comes with three different sizes of chopping grates: large and medium ones for dicing and a fine one for mincing garlic.

Alligator owners also love that this chopper is easy to use; with such a sturdy frame, it doesn’t require nearly as much force to operate as more fragile plastic food choppers. Most users find that it’s easy to clean and like that it’s dishwasher-safe, but some wish that it came with cleaning utensils to simplify clean-up even more.

While the Alligator Chopper excels as a chopper, it doesn’t do anything but chop, so it’s not suitable for home cooks looking for a machine that can do it all.

WHAT WE LIKE:

  • Three different size chopping grates for finer dices and mincing
  • Doesn’t require much force to use
  • Sleek and sturdy stainless steel design
  • Dishwasher-safe
  • BPA-free catch container

WHAT WE DISLIKE:

  • Doesn’t serve any other functions except chopping
  • Doesn’t come with any cleaning utensils

Onion Chopper Pro by Mueller

The Mueller Onion Chopper Pro is a more affordable option than the Alligator for those who just need a simple chopper without extra attachments.

The Mueller chopper is ideal for more casual users who don’t chop large volumes of veggies on a regular basis. Its small, compact size makes it easy to store. However, its smaller size also means that it has a fairly small cutting surface, which will force you to do more pre-cutting.

This onion chopper is dishwasher-safe, but since it is made mostly of plastic, you’ll want to keep it on the top rack while washing. Luckily, it comes with a cleaning brush to help you get into all those nooks and crannies more easily.

One feature of the Mueller that users find particularly frustrating and baffling is that it locks itself closed after each chop. While that may only add about a minute or two to your overall prep time, it does seem like a rather unnecessary and inconvenient feature for a device that’s supposed to save you time!

Several users reported that their Mueller broke after a few uses, while many more found that they had to use excessive force to chop harder vegetables like potatoes.

The Mueller is a practical choice for the casual cook, but may not be up to the task of heavy-duty chopping.

WHAT WE LIKE:

  • Dishwasher-safe
  • Comes with cleaning brush
  • Compact and easy to store

WHAT WE DISLIKE:

  • Locks after each chop
  • Prone to breaking from stress
  • Small cutting area

Vegetable Chopper by Fullstar

This Fullstar Vegetable Chopper comes with seven different attachments, so you can chop, dice, slice, spiralize, and grate to your heart’s content. Customers like that its BPA-free, 1.2-quart catch container has convenient measuring lines so you don’t have to guess how much you’re chopping.

They also like that this all-in-one chopper stores neatly thanks to a handy storage container. Plus, it comes with a safety glove and cleaning tools for your convenience. Some users have noted, however, that the cleaning brush is easily shredded by the chopper’s ultra-sharp blades.

While most buyers are pleased with the Fullstar chopper, it does seem that it’s not the most intuitive chopper for others. Users who have overcome the learning curve have found that a swift, firm strike to the lid with your fist works better than pulling down on it with steady pressure. The latter method will not only make chopping much more difficult but can actually crack the catch container, which some users say is rather delicate.

If you’re prepared to tackle a bit of a learning curve, this may be the perfect multipurpose, manual vegetable chopper for you.

WHAT WE LIKE:

  • Seven different attachments for chopping, dicing, spiralizing, slicing and shredding
  • Extra attachments are easy to store
  • Measuring lines on catch container
  • Comes with safety glove and cleaning tools

WHAT WE DISLIKE:

  • Catch container is not very sturdy or durable
  • Cleaning brush is flimsy
  • Not the most user-friendly for some

Vidalia Chop Wizard

The Vidalia Chop Wizard is a simple chopper with just two sizes of chopping grates. Its rubber feet keep it firmly in place while you chop and its catch container has measuring lines for your convenience.

This chopper holds a maximum of two cups of food, which is fine if you’re cooking for 1 to 2 people most nights, but is less than ideal for a large, hungry family. Its compact size does make it very easy to store in a kitchen drawer, though.

More experienced (and patient) Chop Wizard users love it because it can handle onions, carrots, potatoes, and most other veggies, but the learning curve on this chopper is steep. If you don’t take the time to precut your veggies into 1”-thick slices, center them just so on the grate, and apply pressure in the center of the lid rather than the outer lip, you may bend the metal grate, break the hinges, and/or end up with unevenly cut veggies.

While some users think the Chop Wizard is easy enough to clean, many more have found that its clean-up is tedious, even with the plastic cleaning comb that comes with it.

If you want a sturdy, no-fuss chopper that’s intuitive to use, the Vidalia Chop Wizard may not be the right match for you.

WHAT WE LIKE:

  • Measured catch container
  • Compact size is easy to store
  • Rubber feet prevent slipping

WHAT WE DISLIKE:

  • Prone to breaking
  • Requires a lot of pre-cutting
  • Difficult to clean for many users

CHUGOD Vegetable Chopper

The CHUGOD Vegetable Chopper is an all-in-one chopper that can do just about anything. Its attachments include three sizes of chopping grates, a mandolin, two graters, a julienne slicer, and an egg separator (which obviously doesn’t serve a function in a plant-based diet!).

As an added bonus, it also comes with a safety glove, so you can protect yourself from nasty accidents, and cleaning tools to make clean-up even easier.

Users love that this chopper is up to the task of dicing extra tough veggies, like sweet potatoes and carrots, without the blades dulling or bending. It even stays sharp enough to chop and slice softer produce like tomatoes, which many choppers tend to turn to a mushy mess.

There are a couple of possible drawbacks, according to some users. A few found it cumbersome to store, while another felt that its large size and capacity makes it useful for cooking large meals, but perhaps not the most convenient for everyday use. Most users find this chopper easy to clean, but a few found the cleaning tools that it comes with impractical and inefficient. It’s also not recommended for dishwashers, as they may shorten the lifespan of the CHUGOD chopper’s blades.

Overall, the CHUGOD is a versatile, all-in-one chopper that will make your meal prep much easier.

WHAT WE LIKE:

  • Easily chops and slices hard veggies
  • Multifunctional
  • Comes with safety glove and cleaning tools
  • 1.4-quart catch container

WHAT WE DISLIKE:

  • Not the most space-efficient
  • Can be awkward to clean

Zalik Vegetable Chopper

The Zalik Vegetable Chopper comes with 11 different attachments, so you’ll be able to chop, dice, slice, peel, mince, grate, and julienne with one handy machine. The mandolin has a large guard to protect you It comes with two storage cases — one for the larger attachments and one for the narrower ones — so you can neatly stow it away. Most users find this feature helpful, but a few still found the Zalik Chopper to be difficult to store.

This chopper can handle hard veggies, but only after significant pre-cutting. Users found that the Zalik’s small cutting surface was rather frustrating, as it limits the amount of food you can chop at once and adds to your prep time. Some users also found that the Zalik can be tedious to clean, but most had no problem disassembling it and popping into the dishwasher on the top rack.

Some users were troubled by the apparent lack of clear, detailed instructions for use and assembly, so this isn’t necessarily the most user-friendly multipurpose chopper. Still, it’s worth it when you consider that the Zalik comes with a lifetime warranty. Many users who have had issues with their chopper have praised the customer service they received to help them deal with their issues.

WHAT WE LIKE:

  • Lots of extra functions
  • Storage cases for extra attachments
  • Dishwasher safe (top rack only)
  • Lifetime warranty and great customer service

WHAT WE DISLIKE:

  • Can be difficult to wash by hand
  • Doesn’t have clear instructions
  • Small cutting surface area

Kithouse Chopper

The Kithouse 14-in-1 Chopper is a good option for larger families and dedicated meal preppers who can’t be bothered with single-function choppers or puny catch containers. This formidable machine is one of the larger ones on our list, with an impressive 2-liter container made from BPA-free plastic.

Don’t be intimidated by the Kithouse chopper’s multitude of attachments; customers find that they are easy to use and change. They’re also easy to store thanks to a handy storage case. As many attachments as it has, however, it could benefit from the addition of a finer cutting grid that could handle harder vegetables. The smallest grid it comes with is only suitable for soft fruits and vegetables.

According to users, the Kithouse chopper is easy to clean and dishwasher safe. It even comes with its own cleaning tools.

The Kithouse chopper checks off pretty much everything on the list for the home cook who does it all but doesn’t want to spend all day in the kitchen. If you’re looking for something a bit simpler and more compact, however, you probably don’t need this 14-in-1 machine.

WHAT WE LIKE:

  • Large capacity container is perfect for large families
  • Lots of extra attachments*
  • Easy to clean
  • Easy to store

WHAT WE DISLIKE:

  • Doesn’t have smaller chopping grate for hard vegetables
  • May have more attachments than most home cooks will need

SHOOF 4-in-1 Vegetable Chopper

The SHOOF 4-in-1 Vegetable Chopper may not have as many extra functions as some of the other multipurpose choppers on our list, but what it lacks in quantity of attachments, it makes up for in its quality of design.

Most of the manual choppers we’ve seen so far have had hinged lids, which is a fine design, but repeated use can stress the hinges and cause them to break. The SHOOF brings something else to the table: a lid that pushes straight down instead of opening and closing on a hinge, putting the pressure directly on the food beneath it, for a perfect chop or dice with less effort.

The SHOOF chopper comes with two chopping grids for small- and medium-size dices, a spiralizer, and a shredder, but it would be nice to see a mincer as well for garlic. You may be able to fit most of these attachments within the catch container, but the SHOOF is missing a storage case for these extra parts.

This chopper is BPA-free, dishwasher safe, and has an anti-slip base, plus it comes with a lifetime warranty. Its customers love its design, value, and sharp blades that don’t dull after heavy usage.

If you want a multipurpose manual chopper that emphasizes the quality of its attachments over their quantity, you’ll love the SHOOF.

WHAT WE LIKE:

  • Unique design resists breaking
  • Easy to clean
  • Blades stay sharp
  • Lifetime warranty

WHAT WE DISLIKE:

  • Limited attachments — could use a mincer
  • No storage container for extra parts and attachments

OXO Good Grips Vegetable and Onion Chopper with Easy Pour Technology

The OXO Good Grips Chopper has a special feature: an open-ended catch container that allows you to pour out your chopped food without removing it. Customers certainly do love this feature as well as its compact size that makes it easy to store.

It’s relatively easy to clean for most, although some users have found that it can be difficult to disassemble for cleaning. It’s also advised that you hand wash this chopper as much as possible, and only use the top rack of the dishwasher to avoid melting the container or the plastic cleaning brush that comes with it.

The OXO may seem like the perfect chopper if you’re looking for something simple and straightforward, but it has a rather large drawback: this chopper only comes with one, medium-size chopping grid. That may work on its own for some recipes, but you won’t find yourself reaching for this chopper when you have fine dicing and mincing to do.

There isn’t anything particularly special or outstanding about the OXO Good Grips Chopper. Even if you’re looking for a chopper that only chops, you’re better off with at least two sizes of chopping grids.

WHAT WE LIKE:

  • Easy pour catch container
  • Easy to store

WHAT WE DISLIKE:

  • Only one size chopping grid
  • Some may find it difficult to disassemble

Gourmia Multipurpose Vegetable Chopper Set

Rounding out our list is the Gourmia GCU9215 Multipurpose Vegetable Chopper Set, which comes with seven interchangeable attachments so you can chop, slice, julienne, shred, and grate.

Users love that the Gourmia is easy to use and has so many different, useful functions. Like most of the choppers on our list, its plastic is BPA-free and its blades stainless steel. It also has several rubber grips on the bottom to prevent it from slipping while you chop.

Unfortunately, it would appear that the Gourmia isn’t very sturdy at all. Many users have reported that their chopper broke after just a few uses. It’s possible that some of these instances could have been prevented if the instructions were clearer, but customers have reported that the instructions are confusing and incomplete, which can easily lead to breakage caused by user error.

Several users reported that the blades bend easily when chopping, which can cause the blades’ frame to grate against the frame of the chopper and shave off bits of plastic that fall into the catch container.

Because of its apparent design flaws and fragility, I personally would not recommend this chopper.

WHAT WE LIKE:

  • Non-slip grip
  • Multifunctional
  • BPA-free

WHAT WE DISLIKE:

  • Breaks easily
  • Incomplete/unclear instructions
  • Possible health risk due to plastic flakes in food

Which vegetable chopper do we like best?

We’ve encountered a lot of awesome choppers on our list, but we’ve got to give the number one spot to the SHOOF 4-in-1 Vegetable Chopper.

While it can be convenient to have a multipurpose chopper that can do everything, most home cooks won’t have a need for 10 to 14 different attachments. SHOOF keeps it simple with two chopping grids, a spiralizer, and a shredder. It also comes with three different cleaning tools, which is always a plus.

The SHOOF chopper hits all the right notes: it’s made from BPA-free plastic, its blades are stainless steel, its bottom is slip-resistant, it’s dishwasher safe, it comes in a choice of colors, and it’s easy to clean. Most importantly, it’s easy to use, and this is due largely to the genius of its design. With a push-down lid rather than a hinged one, the SHOOF resists stress that would normally render other choppers useless.

As much as we love the SHOOF, it could be improved by the addition of a mincing grate and a carrying case for extra attachments and tools to make it store as compactly as possible. Other than that, there isn’t much to complain about; the SHOOF is a reliable, user-friendly chopper that will save you loads of time and stress in the kitchen.
