Drinking from a copper water bottle is an Ayurvedic practice that partners very well with veganism. The thinking behind it is that consuming copper infused water can help balance our three doshas, but there are also a few scientifically backed reasons too.
As someone who is obviously aware of how lifestyle can affect your health, you’ll no doubt want to consider the products you choose, as well as the foods that you eat, carefully. Copper water bottles are no different, which is why I’ve put together this article for you.
Here’s everything you need to know about choosing a bottle and the benefits of copper water.

Benefits of drinking copper water
It is thought by many that allowing your drinking water to sit in a copper bottle will bring benefits to both our health and wellbeing.
The copper leaches into the water and is then ingested by your body, which may boost digestion by helping promote the function of the muscles in your digestive tract.
This may mean that your body is better able to detox after drinking copper water, and it is also thought to boost the absorption of vitamins and minerals from the foods you eat as well.

In addition to the digestive benefits, many swear by copper as an aid weight loss as it is said to help break down fat in your body. However, it’s important to remember there are no real scientifically based research papers available which back these claims up.
Another copper bottle benefit widely spoken about is that the mineral aids in wound healing. Copper is said to have antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties which can help your body heal an injury and restore your skin’s health.
At the same time, copper may have anti-aging benefits as well. It might help fight off wrinkles and fine lines by neutralizing free radicals in your body.
But the advantages of drinking copper water do not stop there, as the benefits extend to your entire body and regular consumption may help with a wide range of diseases and health problems.
Copper may help fight heart disease by promoting healthy cholesterol levels and decreasing the collection of plaque in your bloodstream. (1)
Not only that, copper water may also prevent cancer as it fights free radicals, protecting your cells from the changes that lead to tumours and cancer.
Still need more reasons to use a copper water bottle? Your thyroid, joints, and blood might also benefit from having adequate amounts of copper in your bloodstream.
Plus, if you want to protect your brain, copper water is thought to be a great choice. It helps form healthy myelin sheaths, which can enhance the function of your brain’s synapses. Some research also shows copper may protect us from Alzheimer’s disease too. (2)
Finally, copper helps kill bacteria, which can ward off many health issues. Copper water is an effective way to kill E.coli bacteria and prevent other food borne illnesses. (3)
Phew. That’s quite a list!

How to choose a copper water bottle
When you buy a copper drinking bottle, there are some things to consider. Experts caution that you should avoid bottles that are mixture of copper and other metals, so a pure copper water bottle is your best bet.
Opting for pure copper means you’ll fully reap the benefits of the metal, so you should always look at the label to determine if the water bottle is pure copper or not. If you can’t find the information, give the manufacturer a call.
Another thing to remember is to buy only a bottle that is sold by a reputable seller. You should research the manufacturer before you hand over your money in order to ensure you’re getting exactly what you want.
How to use a copper bottle
The reason why copper works is because the water soaks up the mineral when the two come into contact.
Experts recommend storing water in the copper bottle for at least 8 hours before drinking. The longer the water is in the vessel, the more copper will transfer across to the liquid held within.
Water is said to stay fresh, even if when stored for a long time, but I’d feel a little queasy about drinking anything stored for too long, personally. I recommend you fill the bottle, place it in the refrigerator and then drink it in the morning.
When you’re done, simply wash your bottle with a little lemon juice or distilled vinegar and warm water.
As with anything, copper water bottles have sparked some controversy.
Proponents of Ayurvedic practices promote copper as a health benefit. However, other experts counter this by saying that the benefits aren’t worth it. (4)
Doctors say that drinking from a copper container isn’t necessarily harmful for your health (providing you don’t drink bucketloads, of course! – see below), but it might not have the mega benefits that are often spoken about. Therefore, you might want to talk over drinking copper water with your doctor before giving it a try.
Like so many other things in life, if you feel as though it’s working for you, keep on keeping on. If it’s giving you little to no benefit, stop using it. It’s really that simple.
One final note before you start using a copper bottle – too much copper can be harmful to your health.
The United States Food and Drug Administration maintains that 2 milligrams per day is all you need. More than that and you could suffer side effects.
IMPORTANT EDIT: Since publication, the FDA have updated their stance on copper and reduced the DV from 2mg down to 0.9mg. (5)
So, stick to one or two glasses of copper water each day to be on the safe side.
Which is the best copper water bottle? Our Reviews
Now you know a little more about the benefits of drinking copper water, the next step is to get the best copper water bottle you can find.
Luckily for you, I’ve done a little bit of homework and narrowed it down to five products. Let’s take a look!
Kameations Travellers Pure Copper Water Bottle With Cup
The Kameations Travellers Pure Copper Bottle With Cup is a complete system that you can take with you on hikes, to the gym or to work.
This bottle doesn’t hold a large amount of water (which is a recurring theme in our list), so you’ll have to refill on a regular basis.
It holds just over 30 ounces of water, so it’s ideal for anyone on the go as well as for those who simply want to check out the benefits of drinking copper water. The handy cup makes it easy to sip anytime you want to as well.
In terms of looks, its sleek design will be appealing to all. Killing bacteria and improving your health is easy with this bottle from Kameations.
- Sleek design
- 100% pure copper
- Portable and easy to use on the go
- Comes with its own cup, ideal if you don’t like drinking out of bottles
- Small capacity
Sansto 100% Pure Copper Water Bottle
The Sansto 100% Pure Copper Bottle is a popular choice, and for good reason. Handmade in India, this bottle is leak-proof, which is very handy if you have limited space in your refrigerator and often need to lay bottles flat on the shelf.
Its joint-free design also keeps the bottle clean and sanitary and the bottle maximizes copper absorption into your water for mega health benefits.
In terms of quality, the Indian copper used to make this bottle is top of the line and is both durable and attractive to look at.
That being said, the bottle does tend to scratch and dull with repeated use, but the quality stays the same. All in all, this is a fine product and one that is worthy of your consideration.
- 100% pure Indian copper
- Joint free construction
- Good seal to prevent leaks
- Maximum copper absorption
- Scratches and dulls easily
- Not as big as we would have liked
Prisha India Craft Travellers 100% Pure Copper Water Bottle
Next on our list is the Prisha India Craft Travellers 100% Pure Copper Bottle.
Not only do you get a copper water bottle when you order one of these, you also get a few extra goodies too.
While this bottle gets rave reviews in some quarters, there are a couple of concerns to address.
First is the fact that a few bottles have shipped with faulty caps. Some have been said to literally come off despite being tightly twisted on thanks to poor threading, which obviously isn’t good. Naturally, this is going to cause leaks, something I know you’ll be keen to avoid.
The other is that some have received dirty bottles with broken packaging seals. I don’t know about you, but this would put me off in a heartbeat.
Hopefully these issues are one-offs, but I thought it was important to highlight them for you before you make your final decision.
- Nicely finished
- Pack of two will be handy for some
- Dulls and stains easily
- Damaged products have been received
- Some lids do not seal adequately enough
ZULY 100% Handcrafted Floral Engrave Pure Copper Water Bottle
The ZULY 100% Handcrafted Floral Engrave Pure Copper Water Bottle is another choice that has a lot going for it. The product is constructed of premium quality pure copper and features a gasket which prevents leaks and ensures proper temperature control too.
This bottle is handmade from only the best copper and is easy to clean with vinegar or lemon juice. The floral design is extraordinarily pretty, but spoilt somewhat by the inclusion of the brand name at the bottom. Shame.
This bottle comes in at 34oz (1 liter), so it’s one of the larger copper bottles on our list and I do like the fact that this copper bottle comes with a 100% satisfaction guarantee. Any item that offers such an assurance gives you confidence in the product you’re about to spend your money on.
- Beautiful design
- Handmade product
- Gasket prevents spills and leaks
- Good size
- 100% satisfaction guarantee
- Inclusion of the brand name spoils the otherwise wonderful design
- Cap can feel awkward when fastening / unfastening
Kosdeg Hammered Copper Water Bottle
If you’re ready to try Ayurvedic practices and want to experience the benefits of drinking copper water, the Kosdeg Hammered Copper Water Bottle is a premier choice.
The bottle has a joint free cap that promises to prevent spills and leaks, which is something I always try to look for as it’s just so essential to me. This particular bottle also promises to improve your skin and digestion with regular use, although all good copper bottles should do the same thing.
I must say, I do love how stylish the bottle is and how easy it is to fill and go. The slightly grooved cap makes it easy to grip, even with damp hands.
The hammered finish may not appeal to some but, overall, this is a truly excellent product.
- Grooved cap, easy to grip
- Good size
- Leak-free sealing cap
- Quality guarantee
- Easy to clean
- 100% purity tested copper
- Hammered finish won’t be to everyone’s taste
Berigora 30oz Pure Copper Ayurvedic Water Bottle
Our last entry is the Berigora 30oz Pure Copper Water Bottle, and I love it. The beautifully brushed copper just looks so good, you can tell that a lot of time and care has gone into each individual bottle.
As with all copper bottles, tarnishing will occur with the Berigora bottle but, due to the nature of its construction, this is one of the few bottles out there that actually benefits from it. It truly gets better looking the longer you have it.
The copper used is of the highest grade and, thankfully, free from any chemical coatings or lacquers. This should be standard practise, but unfortunately it isn’t.
This product is pricier than many of the others on our list, but the quality really does shine through. No leaks, easy to clean, and solid in the hand, it really is a fine product. The only downside is that it’s not as big as some of its competitors.
- Cool, yet incredibly functional, design
- Fitted O-ring in the cap makes this bottle leak-free
- Beautifully handcrafted
- Water tastes great from this vessel
- Good weight
- Slightly smaller than other copper water bottles

Out of all of the copper water bottle listed above, I’d go for the Berigora 30oz Pure Copper Water Bottle.
Although I would have ideally liked it to hold a little more water, the plus sides make up for it. This bottle is well made and built to last. It doesn’t leak, is joint-free and has a simple, elegant design. It is, without doubt, my copper water bottle of choice.
So, if you’re looking to start getting the many benefits of drinking copper water, this is the one I’d recommend you to check out.
