If you don’t already know, bath bombs, also known as bath fizzies, are small colorful shapes (usually balls) containing moisturizers that fizz up and color bathwater when placed in the tub.

These fun-filled orbs are a favorite among bath lovers and those who take their relaxation time seriously. Whether you’re already a bath bomb buff or simply a bath bomb beginner, there’s no better way to relax than with a hot bath and a moisturizing bath bomb.

We’ve put together a list of our top thirteen cruelty-free bath bombs which might just inspire a gift for a loved one…or maybe even a treat for yourself! Settle in and get that bath running – we’re about to go on a wonderfully wet ride!

What are bath bombs?

vegan bath bombs

Bath bombs are small scented balls that contain moisturizing oils. When you place them in a hot bath, they begin to fizz and release their colors and moisturizers into the water and their scents into the air, creating a pleasant and relaxing sensory experience for you to enjoy while you bathe.

There is no shortage of choices when it comes to bath bombs – there’s a plethora of different options with various colors, scents, and moisturizers fit for any occasion. Manufacturers offer bath bombs for relaxation as well as ones designed to energize and invigorate you with their lush scents and aromas.

Bath bombs are usually made of vegan ingredients, but many brands test their products on animals, which is a cruel process, to say the least. Because of this, it’s important to check whether or not the manufacturer engages in this practice.

What are bath bombs made of?

Different bath bomb companies each have their own proprietary formula for their products, but in general you can expect to find baking soda, citric acid, moisturizers, coloring and scents on the ingredients list. Some products may have scents such as milk and honey, which isn’t vegan. To avoid this, it’s best to buy bath bombs that are clearly labeled as vegan as well as cruelty-free.

Some bath bombs can also contain toxic and harmful ingredients, so it’s often best to stick with bath bombs made in the US in order to ensure that the product you’re purchasing is safe to use. It’s hard to relax in a hot bath knowing that you could be soaking in toxic chemicals!

If you have an intolerance or allergy to gluten, it’s best to look for products and collections that are labeled gluten free, as some scents may contain gluten products.

What should I look for when buying bath bombs?

The deciding factors in most bath bomb purchases will be largely aesthetic and taste-based. Your decision will come down to size/weight, scent, number of bath bombs included, moisturizers, colors, packaging, and ingredient quality.

Size and weight

Bath bombs come in a number of different sizes and weights, usually measured in ounces. In general, you’ll find products that range from about 2.5 oz per bomb to 5 oz per bomb, which will be about the size of a tennis ball.

The size that’s best for you will be partially determined by the size of your tub. Bigger tubs will often need larger bath bombs in order to get the full effect. Similarly, smaller bath bombs will work better in smaller tubs, as the oils will not become diluted in a bathtub that’s too big for them.

Overall, there’s no wrong answer as to what size is ideal. No matter what size you get, you’re almost guaranteed to have a pleasant experience if you’re using a good quality product.

One of the most attractive features of bath bombs are the pleasant aromas they release into the air while they dissolve into the bath. There are many different scents that bath bomb companies offer, ranging from familiar ones like lavender to more creative and exotic fragrances like “Cotton Candy and Strawberry” (this is available in Zen Breeze’s gift set).

What type of scent you decide to go with will be mainly up to personal preference, but it is worth noting that the quality of fragrances does vary from brand to brand: some companies will have overpowering aromas, while others will be barely noticeable. Lucky for you, we’ve already checked that out for you and written about it in our reviews at the end of this article!

Number of bath bombs

Bath bombs often come in sets, which makes them a great gift for many different occasions. Most manufacturers offer sets that range between six and twelve bombs per set, with six being the most common number. However, some assortments come with as many as twenty different bombs.

Another major feature of bath bombs are the included moisturizers. A good bath bomb should leave you with soft, silky skin after your bath.

The most common moisturizers found in bath bombs are coconut oil, cocoa butter, and shea butter. All three of these work to hydrate the skin, leaving it smooth and refreshed. Some bath bombs may leave you with an unpleasant oily feeling, so that’s something to be aware of.

Again, this is going to be largely personal preference. Like any work of art, each manufacturer has its own style. Some focus on intricate designs like swirls and sparkles, while others take a more minimalist approach and only use solid colors. Others don’t use colors at all.

One thing to keep in mind when choosing bath bombs is that all colored bath bombs have the possibility of staining your tub. When a bath bomb is placed in water, it releases colorants that tint the water, which can leave residue on your bath after you’re finished. If this is something that concerns you, it’s best to only use white/color free bath bombs, as these are usually designed specifically not to leave any stains.

Because bath bombs are a popular gift, packaging may be something you want to keep in mind when making a purchasing decision. Most bath bombs have fairly attractive packaging, usually made out of cardboard. Some of the designs are quite luxurious and eye-catching with gold foil and bow included, such as Elijah & Oz’s gift set, while others are a bit more minimalist, like Oliver Rocket’s set, which features just a box with their logo.

Packaging can also be an issue if you’re concerned with environmental impact, as some sets individually wrap their bath bombs in plastic wrap, which leads to excess waste. Others, however, take a more environmentally friendly approach, such as the Elijah & Oz’s set mentioned above, which uses only recycled materials in their packaging.

Ingredient quality

Most reputable bath bomb companies will have good quality and safe ingredients, but it’s important to be wary of brands that don’t mention where they are made or don’t say that their ingredients are non-toxic.

There have been some complaints of people getting rashes and other skin irritations from bath bombs, which may be due to unsafe ingredients. However, it could also be as simple as those people having allergies they weren’t aware of.

To play it safe, it’s best to choose bath bombs that are handmade in the USA with only natural ingredients.

We’ve put together a list of our thirteen favorite vegan bath bombs to aid you in your search for bathing bliss.

Sit back, relax, and read on to see our top picks.

Fancymay Bath Bombs Gift Set

This set of twelve bath bombs makes a great gift – for others or for yourself! We loved the bright colors and strong scents contained within this wide assortment. We also found that they fizzed up very well and by the end of the bath they had dissolved completely, leaving no undissolved remnants.

Fancymay provides a bath bomb for every taste in this collection, with twelve different essential oils running the gamut from tulip to lavender to grapefruit. These are pretty sizable bath bombs, so you’re sure to get a lot of enjoyment out of each one.

All of the fizzies in this set are entirely vegan, organic, gluten free, and handmade, which means they’re also guilt free! The only issue we found was that beneath the individual paper wrapping, each bath bomb was wrapped with plastic, which isn’t the greatest for the environment.

Still, the wrapping was minimal, so we didn’t find it to be too much of a problem.

  • Very colorful
  • Dissolved well
  • Large and dense

  • Plastic packaging isn’t great for the environment

LifeAround2Angels Bath Bomb Gift Set

These bath bombs from LifeAround2Angels are truly beautiful – they impress as soon as you open the box! The swirling designs featured on these really caught our eyes and made us want to hop in the bath straight away.

The founder of LifeAround2Angels originally started the company with the intent of making non-toxic bath bombs for her children, and the company still stands by this mission. All their products are California-made in a facility that is sterilized daily, so you can rest assured that these bath bombs are clean and non-toxic.

Like Fancymay’s offering, this set includes twelve different bath bombs of various scents, such as Kiwi & Strawberry, Mango papaya, and some more abstract ones like “Fun on the Beach” and “Angel”. There are more than enough scents included to titillate your senses.

Unfortunately, we found that these were a little bit on the small side and dissolved a bit too fast. If you’ve got a fairly large tub, you may want to look elsewhere. Otherwise, we really liked these.

  • Beautiful designs
  • Great range of scents
  • Made in the USA

  • We found that these were a little too small and dissolved too quickly

Joanne Arden Organics Vegan Bath Bomb Kit

If quantity is at the top of your priority list, then this is definitely the set for you. This bath bomb set contains a whopping twenty different bombs – that’s more than any other set on our list!

Even with the huge amount of included bath bombs, Joanne Arden organics doesn’t sacrifice quality. These are all handmade in the USA and free of any and all toxic ingredients, so you can be sure that you’re getting a quality product.

We really liked that these didn’t leave any oily residue on the bathtub like many other sets do. This made clean up quick and easy and let us enjoy our baths without having to worry about tidying up too much afterwards. These also didn’t leave us with that oily skin feeling, which was a major plus.

Each bath bomb is clearly labelled with its scent, but we did find the aromas a bit underwhelming. They smelled great out of the box, but when we put them in the bath, the scent was a bit weak and went away quickly. We also found that they didn’t tint the water as much as some of the other bath bombs we tried.

  • Great variety
  • Scents were clearly labelled

  • The scents were a bit faint
  • Water didn’t get as tinted as we would have liked

Gaea Miracle Bath Bombs Gift Set

When looking at this set, it’s important to note that there have been a lot of concerning complaints that these caused rashes and burning skin – definitely not very relaxing! While the brand says the scents are formulated in the USA, it does not say the fizzies were actually made in the USA, which could mean a higher likelihood of contaminants, toxic or otherwise. Perhaps that could explain the many bad experiences some users have had.

Otherwise, Gaea Miracle’s set of six bombs makes for a good introduction to the world of bath fizzies – the brand doesn’t overload you with a huge amount of items in their set, instead keeping it to an easily manageable six. This makes it a good choice for those who are unsure whether or not they’ll enjoy bath bombs or not.

However, given the complaints we mentioned, these could potentially turn you off preemptively, whereas trying another brand would give you a better introduction.

  • Small number of included bath bombs makes for a great way to try fizzies for the first time

  • Many reports of rashes and burning skin from using these…not good at all
  • Scent not as strong as others on the list

Amor Bath Bombs Gift Set

This is a very colorful cornucopia of bath bombs. We really loved the variety of colors and designs included in this set but found that they were a little less refined than other brands like LifeAround2Angels. The inclusion of ten different bombs does give the opportunity to try out a bunch of different scents, but falls short of some of the other sets we’ve found.

We really liked that these were made in the USA – it put our mind to ease regarding the possibility of toxic ingredients being included. These are also completely handmade, so that’s definitely a plus as well. Each set comes with a bar of handmade soap, so that may be a nice addition for some.

Overall, this is a pretty good set of bath bombs. It doesn’t feel as polished as some of the other sets we’ve reviewed, but it does have a very colorful array of bath bombs to choose from.

  • Very colorful designs
  • Comes with a bar of handmade soap

  • Only ten bombs included
  • Doesn’t feel as refined as other sets

Luna Love Naturals

This set of twelve individually wrapped bath bombs is handmade with coconut oil in Florida. We really loved that the owner of this brand seems to have a passion for her product. Similarly to LifeAround2Angels, Kalyn, the owner, started making bath bombs for her daughter before hiring other moms to work with her and grow her business.

Each set comes with a lip balm or bottle of Abby’s Aroma Fragrance, which is a nice little addition to the set. The fact that these are individually wrapped in plastic was a bit of a dissapointment for environmental reasons, however.

There were some reports from other users that these caused rashes or burned their skin. Considering these are handmade in the USA, it’s hard to know whether there are actually harmful ingredients in these or those users just had unlucky allergic reactions. If you know that you have allergies, it may be best to contact the company to inquire about all their ingredients before purchasing.

Overall, this is a very nice set. We found that the size of each bomb was a bit smaller than we expected, but they smelled great and fizzed well. It also felt great supporting a homegrown business that’s truly passionate about their product.

  • You can feel the brand’s passion for their product in every bath bomb
  • Set comes with a bottle of Abby’s Aroma Fragrance or lip balm

  • Smaller than expected
  • Some reports of rashes and burning skin

RegaliaPro Bath Bomb Gift Set

The standout feature of this set is without a doubt the inclusion of twelve heart shaped candles to go along with the twelve bath bombs. These cute candles can really amplify your bath time ambience and take your relaxation time to the next level.

We weren’t thrilled that these weren’t USA made. The company doesn’t give any information about where or how these are made, leaving open the possibility that there are harmful ingredients included.

We were thrilled, however, with their 60 day satisfaction guarantee – there are very few things more relaxing than a risk-free purchase! The company’s confidence in their product definitely rubs off on you – and moisturizes you while it does!

We found these were a bit dry, hard, and difficult to crumble, so it’s hard to say how well they actually moisturize. The scents were also only so-so, and we thought they tinted the water a wee-bit too much. They are very big though, which is definitely a plus.

  • 60 day satisfaction guarantee helps you relax
  • Twelve included heart shaped candles amplify the relaxation time ambience
  • Generous sizes

  • Dry and hard, so they may not moisturize as well as other brands
  • Not the greatest scents

Oliver Rocket Bath Bomb Set

The first thing we noticed about this set was its packaging – I, personally, was very split about whether I thought it was a cool minimalist style, or just a bit too plain. The assortment of colors inside the box also left me with the same feeling: there was a bit too much white, and not enough of the vibrant colors I usually like.

Oliver Rocket is another family-owned business based out of the USA that focuses on small scale production and high quality products. All the ingredients are natural, which is great considering some ingredients in other brands have caused rashes and other skin irritations. These bath bombs are also gluten free, so they’re suitable for those who need to avoid gluten.

The three white bath bombs, which is half of the set, don’t pigment the water like most bath fizzies do, so if you want to enjoy colorful bath water, you may want to skip these. However, that also means they won’t stain your tub. The bombs are also pretty dense, and sink straight to the bottom of the tub instead of floating like most other bath bombs, but we did like their size.

  • Family-owned company based in the USA
  • All natural ingredients
  • Gluten free for those with gluten intolerances
  • Color-free bath bombs won’t stain your tub

  • Not that many included in the set – only six
  • Not the most appealing color range

Missamé Relaxing Bath Bombs Gift Set

This is another set of six fizzies that are handmade in the USA. The focus of this collection is the moisturizing oils, as all the included bath bombs are white with only a dash of color in each. This leads to a somewhat less aesthetically appealing set, but on the other hand you won’t run much risk of staining your tub.

All the ingredients for the bath bombs are locally sourced and each bomb only contains citric acid, food grade sodium bicarbonate, organic sunflower oil, kosher sea salt, organic shea butter, fragrance oil, and colorant. That’s a pretty good set of ingredients! There is one scent called “Milk & Honey”, but don’t worry – Missamé makes it clear that there are no animal products in these.

We really liked the fragrances included in this set – all the aromas were very pleasant and made for a relaxing bath time experience. The bombs were a little on the smaller side, but it didn’t bother us.

  • Unlikely to stain your tub
  • Fantastic fragrances
  • Great ingredients

  • A bit smaller than we would have liked

Elijah and Oz Bath Bombs Gift Set

If luxury is what you’re looking for, this collection is bound to impress. From the gold foil logo to the tasteful bow, this set just exudes elegance. Once you open the box, it doesn’t disappoint either.

This set includes six colorful bath bombs with scents like hibiscus, jasmine, and vanilla. Each bomb is a single solid color, which brings a nice minimalist feel to the set. They each weigh 3.5 oz, so a little smaller than we’d like, but these may work very well for a smaller tub.

Each bomb is individually wrapped, but this time in wax paper, which means you don’t have to worry about wasting plastic when using these – they’re even packaged using recycled materials! The wrapping and labelling also makes it easy to identify what type of experience you’re going to have before you begin your bath.

The only issue we have with these is that the brand doesn’t list its ingredients or where the bath bombs are made. Still, these seem pretty high quality, especially considering Elijah & Oz’s commitment to the environment, and there aren’t any complaints of rashes so far, so it’s probably safe to say there’s not much to worry about on that front.

  • Environmentally friendly packaging made out of recycled materials
  • Very luxurious feel to this set from the packaging to the bombs themselves

  • No ingredients list and no mention of where they are manufactured

MomBomb Luxury Bath Bombs

MomBomb is a bath bomb maker with a mission: $5 of every sale goes to their own charitable organization that was founded to help moms in need, usually dealing with a life changing event such as illness or death of a spouse that leaves them in need of extra support. Their charity funds meal delivery services, gift certificates to reputable child care services, housekeeping services, and laundry services.

Aside from their altruistic aspirations, MomBomb also makes a really great bath bomb! We found that the fizzies in this set lasted a long time and filled up the tub nicely, leaving our skin feeling silky soft and smelling great for hours afterwards.

The set has a bit of a Victorian vibe to it, accented by the antique-style lettering on the front of the box. Unfortunately, these are individually packaged in shrink wrap, so there is a bit of waste. However, that’s more than balanced out by the great cause you’re supporting with every purchase.

  • $5 of every purchase goes to mombomb.org, a charitable organization set up by the company to help moms in need
  • These bath bombs look and smell great, last a long time, and fill up the tub nicely
  • Leave skin well moisturized, no need for lotions after bathing in these!
  • Handmade, cruelty-free, and organic
  • Beautiful box makes for an ideal gift

  • Individually wrapped with plastic which leads to unnecessary waste

Rejuvelle Bath Bomb Gift Set

Rejuvelle made this set very clearly as a gift set meant for someone else, not as a set you’d buy for yourself. The collection is wrapped up like a present with a bow and has a see through pane on the top so that you can see what’s inside.

These bath bombs may look colorful due to the colorful wrapping paper (no plastic wrap – hurray!), but the bombs themselves are actually color-free. This can be either good or bad depending on your tastes – on the one hand they won’t stain the tub, but they also may not be as stimulating to the senses.

Despite the claim that these won’t stain your tub, there have been some complaints that they do in fact leave an orange residue on the tub and on your skin. These complaints are few and far between though, so your mileage may vary.

Each bomb is 2.5 oz, so a bit on the small side, but these will work well for a small tub. The scents are nice, but a bit overpowering.

  • Perfectly packaged for a gift
  • Won’t stain your tub

  • Each bomb is rather small
  • Scents may a bit too strong for some

Zen Breeze Bath Bombs Gift Set

Zen Breeze’s bath bomb set comes with eight multi-colored bath bombs in scents like Cotton Candy & Strawberry and Green Tea & Blueberry – pretty interesting scent combinations! We really liked the colors included in this collection. There were lots of very pleasing swirl patterns that tint the bath invigorating colors.

We were a bit disappointed by how small these were. They also didn’t fizz up that much, and the smell was slightly underwhelming, which was kind of a let down. The lack of fizz from these bombs means that they don’t dissolve that well, which can be a bit of an issue.

Overall, these aren’t bad, but they’re not great either. Nothing stuck out to us as a real problem (except maybe the individual plastic wrap for each of them), but nothing really stood out to us at all.

  • Nice colors and designs
  • Interesting scent combinations

  • They don’t smell as good as they look, which is a shame as the combinations are great
  • They don’t fizz up and dissolve very well

Our pick of the best bath bombs

mom bomb best bath bombs cruelty-free

When it comes to the best bath bombs available online, we’ve got to hand it to MomBomb. Not only did this brand create an outstanding product, but they’re supporting mothers in need with every box they sell.

This alone makes their bath bombs a worthwhile purchase. We loved the scents, colors, and the fact that these were made in the USA with high quality ingredients.

These are a great choice for anyone that’s either looking for a gift or wants to treat themselves to some well-earned relaxation time. If you’re looking for a way to unwind after a long stressful day, bath bombs may be the perfect indulgence. They make great vegan gifts both for others and for yourself – nothing wrong with a little self-care!

We had a great time reviewing these and hope that either you or someone special to you will having an equally enjoyable time using them.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think I hear the bathtub overflowing…
